Amateur Sporting Event

Staffordshire university third team went crashing out in the first round of the cup as they lost 1-0 to a far more superior Derby Buxton first team.

Staffordshire knew it was not going to be their day when their first choice and only keeper Lewis Paglia got injured in the warm-up. With no replacement on the bench, captain Thomas Ramsay took the responsibility of playing in goal, leaving the captains armband to Matthew Bainbridge.

Derby made the brighter start having a majority of the possession and their first real opportunity came on 10 minutes. A stinging shot from 25 yards by Nathan Blissett was looking goal bound, but for a good save by Ramsay just tipping it over the bar.

Derby continued to pile on the pressure and a series of one on ones with the goalkeeper looked certain to give them the lead but a resilient Ramsay proved difficult to beat.

Staffordshire’s only chance and shot on goal in the first half fell to Graeme Johnson who attempted an ambitious lob over the keeper from 15 yards, only to see it sail over the bar.

Derby were finally able to break the deadlock just on the stroke of half-time, when a corner was not properly dealt with. After a quick game of head tennis the ball was finally looped over the helpless Ramsay by Theo Adenuga to make the score 1-0.

After a poor first-half performance, Staffordshire started the brighter of the two sides in the second half. A free-kick from 40 yards was worked straight off of the training ground to leave Jordan Sappler with a good chance, but his volley flew wide of the far post.

Then on 82 minutes a goal-kick was mishit by Derby goalkeeper Matthew Johnson and first to react was Staffordshire’s Joe Pickering. He collected the ball and ran through one on one, and with the keeper covering little of the goal Pickering looked destined to score. He struck it with the outside of his left boot and beat the keeper, only to see his shot fire back off of the post and into the arms of the goalie.

As both teams scrapped for victory things got heated as the full-time whistle approached, and three late bookings were brandished out. Derby were able to hold out though and one goal was enough to see them progress into the next round of the cup.
